Rejuvenation. One of the latest surgical techniques, laser skin resurfacing, commonly called a
"laser peel," uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to remove damaged or
wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The procedure can minimize the appearance of fine facial
lines, especially around the eyes and mouth where aging often first appears. It can also
treat facial scaring or areas that are unevenly pigmented. The procedure can be performed
on the entire face or restricted to specific regions, depending on your specific needs.
Laser skin resurfacing is often done in conjunction with other rejuvenation operations,
such as eyelid surgery, a face lift, or forehead and brow lift.
Laser skin rejuvenation can, in some cases, reduce the amount of bruising and
postoperative discomfort typically seen with other resurfacing methods, while achieving
excellent results.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
What
are the goals of the procedure?
To tighten
and redrape lax skin of the face and neck.
How
long does the surgery take?
Depending on the area to
be resurfaced, laser skin rejuvenation procedures can take anywhere from a few minutes to
1 1/2 hours.
What
can I expect after surgery?
You may experience mild
swelling and discomfort after laser resurfacing, but this can be controlled with ice packs
and medication. A bandage may be applied after your procedure; it will need to be replaced
with a fresh one after a day or two and then removed in approximately one week. A thin
layer of ointment may then be applied to the skin, and you will be shown how to gently
wash and care for your healing skin. Most patients are free of crusts by about 10 days
postoperatively. Redness may persist for several weeks, which can be covered up with
makeup after two weeks or so. Mild pink tones may persist for up to six months.
When
can I return to work?
Most
patients return to work 10-14 days after surgery.
