| Dermabrasion
Procedures. Dermabrasion
and dermaplaning use a controlled surgical scraping method to refinish the top layers of
your skin, softening the edges of surface irregularities to give the skin a smoother
texture and appearance. Dermabrasion is generally used to smooth out deep acne scars and
fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth, and to minimize the intensity or
appearance of scars left by accidents or other surgery. It's can also remove precancerous
growths called keratoses.
Both dermaplaning and
dermabrasion can be used on the entire face or on small areas of skin as called for by
your particular situation. The procedures can be performed alone or in conjunction with
other cosmetic, reconstructive, or rejuvenation procedures, including face lifts, forehead
and brow lifts, scar removal or revision surgery, or chemical peels.
Frequently
Asked Questions.
How long does the
procedure take?
Most dermabrasions take
from 45 minutes - 1 1/2 hours to perform. Depending on the depth and severity of the
problem involved, the procedure may need to be performed in stages or more than once.
What is involved in the
procedure?
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning are generally performed under local anesthesia combined with
a sedative to make you drowsy. While you remain awake, you will feel minimal discomfort.
In dermabrasion procedures, Dr. Ettinger scrapes away the surface layer of skin with a
brush, or a burr containing diamond particles, continuing to scrape until he achieves the
optimum reduction in wrinkling or scaring that can be safely achieved. In dermaplaning, he
uses a special instrument called a dermatome, which evenly skims off the outermost layers
of skin around the wrinkles or defects to be corrected.
What can I expect
after dermabrasion?
Your skin will be somewhat
red and swollen immediately after the procedure, and eating and talking may be difficult.
You will most likely feel a burning, tingling, or aching sensation, but any pain you feel
can be controlled with medications. Swelling will begin to subside in a few days to a
week, but your new skin may be slightly swollen, sensitive, and quite pink for several
weeks. You can gradually resume your normal activities during this time, although more
active sports should be avoided for 4-6 weeks.
When can I return to work?
Most patients return to
work in about 2 weeks.
