Reduction Surgery. Breast
reduction is a surgical procedure to decrease the size of a woman's breasts. Fat,
glandular tissue, and skin are removed from the breasts to make them smaller in size,
lighter in weight, and firmer.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
What are the goals of the
procedure?
To make the breasts smaller, better
shaped, and in proportion with the rest of the woman's body; and to decrease the physical
discomforts caused by large, pendulous breasts.
How long will the surgery take?
Breast reduction procedures require 3
1/2 - 4 hours to perform. This surgery is done at the hospital as an outpatient basis
under general anesthesia.
What can I expect after
surgery?
Your breasts will be bandaged with
gauze and foam tape and you will be wearing a surgical bra. Your dressings will be removed
1-3 days after surgery and your sutures will be removed in 10-14 days. You will continue
to wear your surgical bra for several weeks. You may experience mild to moderate
discomfort for the first week. Swelling and bruising should subside in 2-4 weeks.
When can I return to work?
Most patients return to work in 2
weeks.
