Reconstruction Surgery. Reconstructing
a breast that has been completely or partially removed due to cancer or other disease
processes is a wonderful option for the female patient. The breast mound can be rebuilt
using skin expansion and an implant or by creating a flap of the patient's own body
tissue. You and your surgeon will decide upon the procedure you are best suited for at the
time of your consultation.
Frequently
Asked Questions:
What are the goals of the
procedure?
To create a breast similar in size and
shape to the existing breast; to improve the patient's appearance and quality of life.
How long will the surgery take?
The length of time for breast
reconstruction will vary from 1-6 hours depending on the procedure chosen.
What can I expect after
surgery?
The length of your hospital stay will
vary from 2-5 days based on the procedure chosen for your reconstruction. You will have a
surgical drain in place to help remove excess fluids from the surgical site. This drain is
removed 5-7 days after your surgery. You may experience a moderate amount of discomfort
for 10-14 days. Sutures are removed 10-14 days after surgery.
Will there be any follow-up
procedures?
After any breast reconstructive
procedure, there is often a need for secondary surgeries to further sculpt the breast and
reconstruct the nipple areolar complex.
When can I return to work?
Your return to work will vary from 2-8
weeks depending on the reconstructive procedure chosen.
